QT WELLINGTON | HOT SAUCE
Completed 2017

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Wellington is a wonderful city--it is unexpected in its richness and cultural interest. You can turn a corner and find a quirky lane, an overhead lighting installation, an art mural, a hole in the wall bar... there is an appreciation for the most bizarre and for the homegrown. It is strong for its contrasts in weather and mood--either intolerably windy or mirror still and clear. In this context the QT Museum Hotel sits, and within this Hot Sauce Restaurant lounge Bar. Hot Sauce has its sister connections back to QT Melbourne. It must 'surprise' but in the end it must be a space you want to 'inhabit', so it must be intriguing, but put you at 'ease'. The colours initiate from the ‘Hot Sauce’ branding, there are definitely some Asian elements. We wanted to create an overall ceiling light feature--a 'monolithic' adventure --the 'dumpling steamer' was an obvious Asian element. The possibilities of dappled and patterned mysterious light falling through the steamers has created a unique atmosphere.
